The Cruelty War began on the same day and gained infamy when ordinary citizens tried, convicted, and hanged Mary, another circus elephant, in 1916. Mary's cruel and senseless death accelerated the campaign for a more humane society that was forged by Bourke Cockran, a brilliant lawyer and Federal Legislator; Sarah Scrivener, a crusading Journalist for The New York World; and George Westinghouse, the renowned inventor and humanitarian.
