THE RISE OF POSITIVITY

Seems to me that we are bombarded with negativity in our news—fires, murders, slanderous statements, and just plain vulgarity. "Tears and fears" rule the airways and print ways. So I'm switching to positivity by telling you about my Saturday last. I hope that you find the change refreshing.

My SO—significant other, opposite sex—and I drove some 50 miles to a favorite restaurant where our forty-something server, Tom, a k a jar head for his stint in the Marines, told us that he coached midget sports. So, I naturally asked him what he thought of the Steelers' hiring of a player with questionable morals. He said that he was unhappy that the ball club's management had apparently sold its ethics to the gods of money and winning.

So, naturally, I asked him what he said about this to his young charges. He replied that he takes the high road by teaching—insisting on—sportsmanship, and, above all, respect for teammates, opponents, and a life in equal, massive doses.

Then, on the drive home, a strange icon flashed on the data screen in my almost-new, hi-tech car. I pulled into a dealership and, by amazing coincidence, flagged a mechanic—the Service Manager?—as he was leaving the service bay. He immediately grasped the situation, drove my car into the service area, and returned fifteen minutes later with my keys and a clear explanation of the problem and how he had fixed it.

This good Samaritan declined my offer to pay the dealership or to tip him for his prompt service. When I quietly insisted that I owe him something for not only fixing the problem but also relieving my anxiety, he merely asked that I bring my car to this dealership the next time it needs service.

Someday I will write sequels to my books "The Power of Ethics" and "The Power of Dignity." They will be nothing but Positivity, as will my next blogs. Please stay tuned.
