Who Murdered Mary?

Based on real events in 1916 in a real town, Who Murdered Mary? is a tale of mindless greed, heartless animal cruelty, a murdered elephant, and two wars. The Current War ended when Tom Edison electrocuted Topsy, a circus elephant, in 1903. The Cruelty War began on the same day and gained infamy when ordinary citizens tried, convicted, and hanged Mary, another circus elephant, in 1916. Mary's cruel and senseless death accelerated the campaign for a more humane society that was forged by Bourke Cockran, a brilliant lawyer and Federal Legislator; Sarah Scrivener, a crusading Journalist for The New York World; and George Westinghouse, the renowned inventor and humanitarian.

This is a lamentable tale of man's cruel treatment of wild animals, and a plea for more compassionate treatment of humans and animals by a more humane and considerate society. The book pleads for a society that can be initiated and sustained by humanizing animals through minor revisions to the Bill of Rights in the US Constitution; Federal, State, and Local laws, and each individual's interpretation of The Golden Rule.
